DIY: Coconut Oil Vapor Rub

Coconut Oil Vapor Rub

With cold and flu season in full effect, I like to make sure I’m prepared! One of my favorite remedies for congestion is a soothing vapor rub. I decided to make a standard rub for bedtime and one that can be used in the shower. Both are wonderful for relieving congestion and clearing nasal passages. I’ve listed the ingredients and directions for both rubs below.

Bedtime Vapor Rub

2 Tablespoons Kelapo Coconut Oil

Eucalyptus or peppermint essential oil

Small, plastic container with a lid ( I used a small, shallow container from my local grocery store)

Directions for the bedtime vapor rub:

Take 2 tablespoons of coconut oil and add it into your small container. Next, add 5 to 7 drops of the essential oil into the coconut oil. Stir both oils together to evenly incorporate the ingredients. If the mixture is not strong enough for your liking, continue adding the essential oil in 2 drop increments until the desired scent is achieved. Once complete, massage the vapor rub onto your chest and breathe the aroma in slowly as you begin to drift off to sleep.

Ingredients

Shower Vapor Rub

2 Tablespoons Kelapo Coconut Oil

2 Teaspoons peppermint or eucalyptus liquid soap (I used Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soap)

Peppermint or eucalyptus essential oil (optional)

Small, plastic container with a lid

Directions for the shower vapor rub:

Take 2 tablespoons of coconut oil and add it into your small container. Next, add 2 teaspoons of a peppermint or eucalyptus liquid soap to the coconut oil. If you would like the scent of the vapor rub to become stronger, add 2 to 4 drops of peppermint or eucalyptus essential oil and mix well. Take the rub with you into the shower and massage onto your chest. Breathe in slowly and let the hot water run over the rub, the combination of the vapor rub and steam will help clear up bothersome congestion.
