National Free Coffee Day

I know, I know. I’m supposed to be reviewing last night’s episode of Top Chef: Just Desserts. Don’t worry, it’s coming on tomorrow’s blog along with a really great recipe that I promise is worth the wait!

To make up for it, I’m informing you that today is National Free Coffee Day! Love senseless holidays that result in free food or services. See also: National Free Pancake Day (March 1), National Free Shipping day (Dec 16), National Free Doughnut Day (June 1), and  Free Slurpee Day (on 7-11, don’tcha know!)

According to the National Coffee Association, an Ethiopian goat herder named Kaldi was the first to realize coffee’s wonders: “It is said that he discovered coffee after noticing that his goats, upon eating berries from a certain tree, became so spirited that they did not want to sleep at night.”

Today, those berries are then harvested and processed, the beans dried, milled and exported, the coffee tosted, roasted, ground and brewed — all to get to that steaming mug in front of you. Over 400 billion cups of coffee are consumed each year. It is a world commodity that is second only to oil (well, not coconut oil. YET.) Don’t forget to take a coffee break (or two) to celebrate this historical and important beverage!

Turns out, your career could dictate whether you’re more likely to chug coffee during the day, according to a Dunkin’ Donuts/Career Builder survey. The top 5 professions likely to “need coffee to get through the workday the most” are:

1.Scientist/Lab Technician

2.Marketing/Public Relations Professional

3.Educator/Administrator

4.Editor/Writer

5.Kelapo’s Chief Coconut

Okay, so I made that last one up. But you should see her without her caffeine. Eek!

Here’s our breakdown of everywhere you can score a free cuppa Joe today:

Caribou Coffee (BOGO)

7-11 (until 11am)

Krispy Kreme

Dunkin Donuts (Gotta have your 50 cent coupon though! Doesn’t count if you called it a “coo-pon.” It’s “Q-pon,” people!)

Thornton’s (not quite sure what this is, but apparently they have free coffee!)

McDonald’s (call your local location, since not all are participating. To that I say, Bah-Humbug!)

Chick-Fil-A (Bonus Chick-Fil-A freebie: Bring in your church bulletin on Mondays to receive a free chicken sandwich!)

Café Kili (here in Tampa)

So Cal’s Klatch Coffee

Suspiciously missing from this list? That’s right, Starbucks, I’m looking at you. Glaring, more like it. I hope no one goes there today.

Enjoy your free coffee today, everyone! Please comment below if I missed a good one.
