Save Your Spray Tan with Coconut Oil

Before and After

Last weekend, I competed in the NPC Florida State Championships, taking 5th place in the bikini division of bodybuilding. For those of you who may not be familiar with this sport, my goal was to achieve the best “beach body” on stage. In order to best highlight the lines and definition of muscular development, a dark spray tan is required. This isn’t your normal “I have a special event” spray tan – this tan is meant to look extremely dark to match the stage lighting.

After my competition is over, I make sure to wash my skin with mild soap to make it less intense and give me a nice, bronzed body. I do NOT exfoliate as this will remove nearly all the color and may leave you blotchy. Even without exfoliating, I’ve had problems in the past with my spray tan getting extremely spotty and didn’t want this to happen again. One way to keep and maintain a good spray tan is to moisturize, but one problem with store bought lotions is the first ingredient is often water which evaporates off your skin instead of seeping in.

All Tanned!

For the past week, I’ve been applying coconut oil all over my body to see if this would help keep my spray tan lasting longer. Among its many benefits, coconut oil is known for its immense moisturizing qualities, especially on the skin. Sure enough, the experiment was a success! It’s been exactly one week since I had the spray tan applied and still have a glowing, bronzed color. This weekend I’m going to try Michelle’s three-ingredient moisturizer to see if this combination will help extend my spray tan even longer. Once the spray tan starts to fully lose its color, I like to rub away the excess with an exfoliating body wash and loofah.

I’m beyond excited that I found a new way to keep my spray tan looking good after my competitions. Have you tried extending your spray tan with coconut oil?
