Monkey Bread Made Easy

One of my all-time favorite fun snacks to make is monkey bread! There’s just something about the warm, gooey, pull apart pieces that gets so addicting. Being that I could easily eat half the bread myself, I decided to recreate the original recipe into one that is a little healthier. Here’s what you will need:

  • 16 oz. of your favorite wheat pizza dough (you may use store bought dough, I used Trader Joe’s wheat pizza dough)

    Fresh out of the oven

  • 3 tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup coconut oil, at room temperature
  • 1/4 cup real maple syrup (you may use sugar free)
  • ¼ cup raisins (optional)
  • ¼ cup walnuts (optional)

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.

When using store bought pizza dough, remove it from the package and let it sit for about 20 minutes.

Next, spray a 9-inch cake pan with coconut oil cooking spray.

Combine cinnamon and sugar in a small bowl and set aside (you may do this in a large ziplock bas as well).

Break off 1-2 inch chunks of your dough and roll into balls.

Roll each ball in the cinnamon mixture and place them into the prepared cake pan. Continue to do this for each ball of dough until the pan is completely full.

In another bowl, combine applesauce, melted coconut oil, and maple syrup. Stir all ingredients together until evenly mixed and then pour the syrup mixture over the balls of dough.

Bake for 25-27 minutes. Once done, allow to cool for several minutes in the pan then invert pan on top of a large plate to serve. Dig in and enjoy!
