National Pretzel Day

Pretzels are the perfect snack for any day. Great for game day festivities or just afternoon snacks for the kids. I always loved watching how they made pretzels at the snack stands they had at the mall, so why not make them myself? To celebrate National Pretzel day I’m going to try my hand at making homemade pretzels! They’re actually simple from what I read on the recipe instructions. There are many recipes out there but I found the one from Tasty to be the simplest one. Plus, who doesn’t love a great tutorial video?

Homemade Soft Pretzels

I’ve tweaked the original recipe a bit. It’s actually better to use ghee or butter instead of olive oil and 4 cups of flour is more than enough.

Ingredients needed:

1 ½ cups of water (warm)

1 tablespoon of salt

1 tablespoon of sugar

1 packet of active dry yeast

4 cups of flour

3 tablespoons of Kelapo Ghee (divided)

⅔ cup of baking soda

2 eggs (beaten)

Coarse salt

Kelapo Coconut Oil Non-Stick Spray

In a large bowl, add the water, salt and sugar then mix until all is combined. In that same bowl, add the yeast and let it sit for about 5 to 8 minutes, or until the yeast starts to foam. Once the yeast starts to foam, add the 4 cups of flours and 2 tablespoons of Kelapo Ghee. Mix all the ingredients together until the consistency changes. During this step, I find it best to use your hands to knead the dough Once the dough forms, remove it from the bowl. With a brush, spread the rest of the Kelapo Ghee all over the bowl so when you place the dough back it, it won’t stick to the edges. Cover up the bowl with the dough with a plastic wrap and leave it out in a warm area for about 1 hour. While the dough rests, preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Once the dough is done, take out of the bowl and lay out on counter or cutting board. Cut the dough in half and each half into 4 pieces totaling 8 pieces of dough. You’ll want to use your hands to roll each piece into thin ropes. Once you’ve made thin ropes, twist the two ends to form a pretzel shape. Fill a large saucepan with water to boil and add the baking soda. Once you’ve brought that to a boil, place each pretzel in the boiling water for about 30 seconds. Place your pretzels in a baking sheet already greased with Kelapo Coconut Oil Spray. Using a brush, spread the egg wash over the top of each pretzel and then sprinkle with coarse salt. Place them in the oven for about 10 to 15 minutes, or until golden brown. You can enjoy these with cheese sauce or mustard! Either way, they’re delicious.

Peace, love and Kelapo
