Toddlers and the Flu

If you have kids you know how easily they can get sick! So how do we prevent our little ones from getting sick? Well, I don’t think we can fully protect them from getting sick but we can try! My little guy has only gotten sick about twice in the last 2 years which I am thankful for but it still stinks. I’m not one for medicine, especially since he isn’t even two yet, so I like to find natural remedies for the cold.

Coconut Oil is my go to item of choice whether I am cooking or I need to feel better so of course I thought of using coconut oil on my little guy!  On our website, www.kelapo.com you can learn that extra virgin coconut oil is comprised of medium chain triglycerides, or MCTs, that you could say are the most recognized ingredients of plant based saturated fats. The most recognizable of all the MCTs is lauric acid. “When lauric acid is present in the body, it is converted into monolaurin, a monoglyceride compound which exhibits antiviral, antimicrobial, antiprotozoal and antifungal properties. It acts by disrupting the lipid membranes in organisms like fungus, bacteria and viruses, thus destroying them.” –Natural News. Basically what I am trying to some you is that coconut oil may help to fight off the bacteria that is in your system which causes you to become sick!

After a couple of days of my son having a cough, runny nose and a slight fever, I chose to run to my Kelapo Coconut Oil! Every weeknight is the same around our house, I think it is good for kids to have a schedule, so we have dinner, he takes his bath, we play and then it’s bedtime. So for the last couple of nights ,after Aidan got out of the bath, I gave him about a teaspoon of coconut oil by mouth. I use coconut oil in almost all of my dishes, but split that between three people and you really aren’t consuming that much, so I wanted to make sure he got some added oil! He loved it so much that he wanted more!

Excited for Kelapo!

My mom watches Aidan during the day so for the next couple of days I would check in with her to see how he was feeling. Would you guess that she said he was feeling a lot better? His nose wasn’t as stuffy, his cough was lessening and he felt closer to a normal temperature! Now you might think this was a coincidence but I honestly believe that giving him that extra coconut oil really helped his body to get back to normal!

Some other ways that I use coconut oil while my guy is sick is by making Kayla’s DIY vapor rub. I will rub a little on his chest at night so it helps to keep his nose clear. Also, when you have a runny nose does your nose ever tend to “dry out” from blowing your nose so much? My son had a dry nose so I made sure to rub some oil to help keep it moisturized because dry skin is no fun!
