Top Chef Seattle: Restaurant Wars

Josie and Kristen

Each season Restaurant Wars is the episode all the contestants dread and all of us viewers love to watch. This season the two teams were split based on gender, in a classic boys vs. girls showdown.

The boys are led by Sheldon whose concept is modern Filipino with the name, “Urbano.” The girls are led by Kristen whose concept is French cuisine with the name, “Alterlier Kwan.”

This year there was an added twist to the challenge that the do not realize until they arrive at their restaurant space. Upon arrival, they realize that this year they not only have to build a restaurant, but also their kitchen area! This unexpected twist sets the teams into high gear.

During prep for the meals the girls’ team leader, Kristen, has a few problems with Josie and her being “too slow.”  The boys of Team Sheldon are worried because they have never cooked Filipino food before.  However, the girls can’t seem to overcome their problem with Josie and boys manage to do just fine cooking the food!

During the competition, Kristen becomes fed-up with Josie and her lack of time management skills.  The judges start at the girls, “Alterlier Kwan,” and are beyond disappointed in the bouillabaisse prepared and cooked by Josie. They then head to the boys, “Urbano.” The judges love all of the food, but are enraged with the poor and frankly rude service they received from Stefan.

The whole gang!

During judges table the boys are announced the winning restaurant and Sheldon wins the night!

That leaves us with Josie and Kristen.  Josie immediately begins blaming Kristen for her failed dish. Kristen refuses to tell the judges about Josie’s lack of time management skills and inabilities and thus the judges make the decision to send Kristen home. Everyone, was in shock by their decision to keep Josie, but the judges based it on what they saw and were told about THIS challenge.

Despite, the sad elimination of a great chef I still had a favorite dish from both teams! That is because BOTH teams served a coconut dessert, Almond Cake Macaron with Coconut Custard & Caramel Buttercream and Halo-Halo: Coconut Sorbet, Avocado Mousse, Banana & Shredded Coconut! I guess we aren’t the only ones who are coco-nuts!

What’s your favorite coconut dessert? My favorite is coconut oil macaroons!
